Once Bailey joined us on the veranda, I pointed the two men toward a table at the far end, out of the way of the caterer's staff, and left to get them drinks.
When I returned with a glass of sweet tea, a mug of half-decaf coffee, and another of mulled cider, along with a collection of muffins that I'd quickly defrosted in the microwave, the two men seemed to have becomeâ¦if not exactly friends, at least respectful business associates. I hoped that meant Bailey would be amenable to answering my questions about Dr. Cannon without getting riled up again.
"I'll come out to take a look at the stables on Monday," Daniel was saying as I arrived. He immediately shook his head. "No, wait. I'm not sure what my schedule will be after this weekend. I promise I'm not putting you off. I still need to sit down with the office manager to figure out how I can do the work of two vets until I can bring in some backup. I'll have her call you to set up an appointment."
"Thanks," Bailey said, handing him a card with his contact information. "And I'm sorry I called you a tool before. You're not like the other vets who worked for Dr. Cannon. Maybe that's why you managed to stick around longer than any of the rest."
"I was truly fortunate to work with such a good mentor as Dr. Cannon," Daniel said. "I'm sorry you didn't have a better experience with him."
I took a card from Bailey too and settled in a seat between the two men. "Looks like you two don't actually need me to broker a peace."
"Nah, we're good," Bailey said. "But everything's better with sweet tea. And I've heard good things about the breakfast served here."
"You should stop by sometime," I said. "My treat."
"Thanks. I will." Bailey helped himself to a pumpkin muffin.
"I'm curious about something," I said while he pulled the top off his muffin and popped it into his mouth whole. "You said Dr. Cannon needed a second chance once. I've never heard anyone criticize him for anything, so I can't help wondering what you meant."
He held up one finger for time to let him swallow the muffin top before saying, "I don't know much. It was a long time ago, and I only heard about it from my dad. I was too young to really understand at the time. Dad started our stables, you know, and that's why I'm so determined to get our good name back."
"I understand." I automatically glanced at the owners' quarters, where Em had just emerged, her short hair still damp from her shower. She was glancing longingly at the path to Rackhouse. "Family comes first."
"Yeah." Bailey broke the bottom of the muffin into three chunks. "Anyway, all I remember is that Dad said Doc Cannon missed the early signs of a rare but highly contagious disease when he was just starting out, and it spread to several farms before he figured it out.
